Fall is coming, which means more outside adventures and that means more clothes and more layers of clothing! It’s time to enjoy the cooler weather and get out the warmer clothes. Swimsuits, flip flops and tank tops can get packed away while sweaters, jeans and boots can come out to play!

Out with the Old

Fall is a great opportunity to get rid of some unused or outgrown summer clothes, especially for kids. By the time next summer rolls around, they are likely to need to update their wardrobe to fit their growing bodies. Depending on the age of the person, they may or may not have any growth spurts in store

Sort through your summer clothes and decide which ones will go and which ones to keep. Take any clothes that are no longer wanted and put them in a pile, so you know that you will not be packing these away.

Depending on the condition of these items, they can be donated to a thrift store, a neighbor or taken into a consignment store. With consignment, there is the possibility of making money on your discarded clothes. But, any of these options are a great way to recycle!

Putting Summer Away

One of the most convenient ways to store clothes is to use plastic containers with lids. The clear plastic ones work best since they allow you to see what is inside without actually getting the bin out and looking through it.

These containers can easily be stacked one on top of the other, if need be. If space is a problem, and packing away simply means to keep those items in a drawer that you don’t use, there is a simple way to make room for a lot of clothes in a small area.

This organizing tool is called the FlipFold, and I highly recommend them to my clients. It works for any type of shirt as well as jeans, shorts and skirts. Watch this video to see this great product in action!

Fall Attire

Jeans, sweaters and sweatshirts definitely take up more space in the closet than the light clothing worn in summer and spring. Hanging these up on hangers is the best way to save space and also helps you to see what you have.

Organizing your hanging clothes by color and type can be helpful as well. I like to hang like with like:

  • Jeans
  • Slacks
  • Long-Sleeved Shirts
  • Sweaters
  • Sweatshirts
  • Jackets

Dividing your clothes up this way can allow you to grab something in a hurry, say on your way to the next neighborhood cookout. The transition from summer to fall is made easier when you know where things are and can easily locate them.

Hanging clothes by color is another way to quickly identify what it is that you are looking for and get you on your way. This can mean less stress and time spent in the closet trying to find that perfect outfit or that blouse that you had in mind to complete your outfit.
