I got a GREAT suggestion from someone about the letter J! We all have one (or more), everyone has to have one (but doesn’t want to admit it), but how do you maintain some semblance of order in a “JUNK” drawer? This was the questions posed to me and I thought it was a wonderful topic to discuss on my blog!
So where do you begin with a junk drawer? You have to begin at the same place that you begin any project…by asking yourself “what is working” and “what is NOT working?” We know that is junk drawer is just that, but there are things in the drawer that need to be there and are handy. Remember, for the most part, it is there because it is convenient and convenience is what I am all about.
1) First start out by pulling everything out of the drawer.
2) Figure out what needs to be there and what doesn’t need to be in there (and find an appropriate home if it does not belong there or make the trash your new best friend).
3) If you have any batteries, consider keeping them in the refrigerator for a longer “shelf” life. I have also found some great Tupperware type of containers that will fit the different type of batteries (The Container Store).
4) Take notes on the shapes of the items and similar things that need to be kept together.
5) Find an expanding type of container or something that can be maneuvered to accommodate everything that you have decided needs to be there.
6) Pull “like” things together and place them back in the drawer so that it makes sense for you.
7) Stand back and feel a sense of pride at completing a task well done. Now, you have to make a committment to maintain the drawer and it will continue to stay in the same shape.
Let me know if you have any other suggestions for a junk drawer! We would all love to hear other ideas about what has worked and what has not worked for you. Also, if you have any suggestions for other letters in the alphabet, let me know and we can blog about that and provide some great ideas!
Thanks for the great suggestion Angie!
Happy Organizing! Bridges
