Good Organizing Habits

The Organizer Lady

I subscribe to Messies Anonymous and receive a daily message.  In those messages are some great habits that are relevant to people that are organized.  I wanted to share some of those habits to either confirm you are on track, or to give you something to think about!  I always get a good chuckle…enjoy!

1.  AVOID CLUTTER – Don’t pick it up later; put it up now.
2. FOLLOW THE RULE OF TEN (MINUTES) – Set a timer for ten minutes and attack a hot spot with a vengeance.  Some call it the ten minute tidy.
3. MAKE YOUR BED every day, every day, every day. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just done. You will have a beautiful neat aura emanating from the bedroom!
4. CLEAN AS YOU GO – Keep short accounts by putting things up as you work. As you cook, wash and dry your pots, pans, etc. or put them in the dishwasher as you go.  As you do a project, keep your tools and pieces corralled and put them away immediately.  When you clean, return cleaning products and tools immediately. Otherwise you will leave more mess behind than you clean up.

5. JUST DO IT – Do not wait till you feel like it.  Just move your body through the motions like a robot if that is all you can do. Face the fact that some things do not inspire. It is nice to want to. But do not wait for the humor to hit you. Just do it.

6. USE LITTLE MINUTES –  Whenever you have a minute or two, do a little something. Dusting, picking up a thing or two, filing a paper, these are things that can be done in a jiffy. Make this habit a part of your overall program and the house will begin magically to clear up.

7. LEAVE NO TRACE – The boy scouts have a rule that when you leave an area you should leave no trash showing that you have ever been there.

8. STOW AS YOU GO –  Weave this habit into your life and your house will change.

9. PUT YOUR SHOES UP – This may mean you need to rearrange your closet (or wherever you keep your shoes). Do you need a shoe holder? Do whatever it takes to make it easy to get them in or out. Then do it.

10. KEEP THE CAR CLEAN – by bringing in debris and other items each time you go into the house. Each time you stop at a service station or any other area with a trash can, dejunk your car. Each person who is in the car should remove all of their own items plus any junk that may have developed.

I hope this gives you something to think about.  Even if you just pick up one habit, you are further ahead.  Which one are you going to commit to?

Happy Organizing!  Bridges
