For the person that struggles with getting and staying organized, there are always excuses holding them back from accomplishing what they want to do! Here are a few organizing excuses to chew on…
1) I don’t have the time to get organized! Did you know that for every hour of planning that is done, 3-4 hours are saved from redundancy, waiting for information, not being prepared and poorly managed tasks. If you invest in the time upfront, it will save you time on the back-end when you don’t have the time to deal with it (or you can’t find something).
2) I paid a lot of money for that! There is a cost associated with everything that you keep. There is the cost of time, peace of mind, or the money that you have spent on maintenance. Did you know that it costs an average of $10 per square foot to store your items in your home?
3) It was a gift! Love the giver, but not the gift. Remember, gifts that don’t fit your lifestyle are just clutter!
4) I might need it someday. Take the emotion out of it and consider the reality–have you every needed any of these items that you have convinced yourself that you might need someday? Or, if the need rose, would you know where to find that item? Give yourself the permission to get rid of it!
5) It just needs to be fixed. If you don’t fix something as soon as it breaks, face it, you’re probably not going to. This is considered a delayed decision. Make a decision to take action and put these items back into use by fixing it or let it go!
6) It is a souvenir (or it brings back memories). Take a photo of it and let it go…
If you struggle with any of these, think about the real reasons that you are hanging onto your items and come to terms with it. There is always a way to find a great home for your items! I do a ton of consigning for my clients and it is a great way to make some money and find a new home for your items!
Happy Organizing! Bridges
Having a hard time getting the kids or hubby to let go of things that really need to go? Do what I did recently; wait until it’s 112 degrees out(maybe not the BEST idea) and wait for them to go to work/camp, then purge! My closets and garage are magnificient now and the folks at GoodWill are happy. I even have a pile to consign and make some extra money. My boys don’t miss what I got rid of (they hadn’t seen it in months anyway)! I even loss some weight in the process (sweat equity!) lol!
Jan,
That is a great idea to share. Some people have a really hard time letting go of their items because of sentimenal attachment, yet they don’t know what all they have! It is such a GREAT feeling to purge and feel cleaned out. Good luck with your consignment…
