purging

Tips on sorting your project!

Sometimes a project seems overwhelming because you don’t know where to start!  The first place to start the purging and organizing process is always sorting, which for some people, is very overwhelming in and of itself.  Here are a few tips to help get that project started!

1.  Sort the things you are going to keep into categories that make sense to you.  Two people can look at the same pile of stuff and sort it differently.  If this system is for you, then sort into categories that make sense for you.

2.  Don’t forget to include the categories of things to throw away, shred or donate.

3.  Try really hard to only keep what you need or love!

4.  When sorting, limit your categories.  When you are finished sorting, if any category is too large, you can divide it into sub-categories.

5.  Give yourself boundaries for categories that tend to be too large.  For example, decide on a container, space or a shelf that will contain your pile.  When the pile exceeds the boundary you have established you need to get rid of some of the pile.

6. Remember, your goal for this project is to come up with a home for everything!  That means absolutely everything.  If what you are sorting doesn’t fit into a category or you will not be able to find a “home” then that should help you decide on what to do with that item.

7.  And finally, your memories are stored in your heart.  You don’t have to keep everything to hang onto the memory of that person or item.  Remember, you can always take a picture of the items and then find an alternate home for it.

I hope that helps you out with some tips for sorting an overwhelming pile of stuff.  I loved the feedback on my mail tips yesterday.  If you have any additional tips that you would like to share…I would love to hear them (along with everyone else)!

Happy Sorting!  Bridges
