get organized

What are your “real” reasons?

For example, here are some surface issues that may come to mind quickly:

1) You don’t like the way that your home looks

2) You may be stressed when you are at home so you eat out most of the time…it is easier.

3)  You can’t find the things that you need when you need them.

4) You are too embarrassed the have anyone over to your house.

With the deeper issues, the truth usually has little to do with how your space looks.  Here are some examples:

1)  A Mom who couldn’t find things when she needed them, really just wanted the chaos in her life to stop.  She wanted to create a more positive environment for her family that was healthy.  She didn’t want the chaos in her life to be passed down to her kids.

2) A Man who was embarrassed when other friends saw the mess in his house, really wanted to be able to reciprocate the social invitations and invite friends over to his house.  He really wanted more of a social life!

3) A woman who didn’t like being in her home or liked the way it looked, really just needed her home to be a sanctuary where she could come home and relax and spend some quality time.

4) A man ate most of his meals out because his house was cluttered.  He realized that this disorganization made him feel like he was out of control and it drained his focus, mental and physical energy.  When he was away from his house, it made him forget about the clutter for a while!

So, think about it, is there anything healthy about this?  Do you understand your “deeper” issues with your home and clutter situation?  Like with anything in your life, it is so important to understand the real reason you do what you do.  When you have mastered that, it is easier to move forward.

As a Professional Organizer, it is my job to understand the real reasons I am there and what my goals are before I start the organizations process.  Remember, it is not a “one size fits all” process that I go through, I have to understand what it is that I am tackling!
