Name the messiest room in your home.
Is it the kitchen? Nope.
Bathroom? Guess again.
Closet in your bedroom? Not even close.

For most people, the garage is by far the messiest room in their home. In fact, some people even put organizing the garage so far down on their list of things to do that it never gets done. If this sounds too familiar, then utilize these tips, tricks, and facts to get your garage tidy.

Why it’s important to have a clean garage: If you can’t fit your car in the garage anymore, that should be your first motivation to cleaning up. You spent thousands of dollars on a car, only to leave it exposed to the elements? No way! Getting the garage organized will provide you with a safe place to keep your car.

If you can still fit your car in the garage, but the rest of the floor space in your garage is taken over by clutter, consider this: Having a cleaner garage will actually help decrease anxiety. Currently, when you come home to a cluttered garage, you think about all the many things that need to be done in your home, mentally adding “organize the garage” to the bottom of the list. Coming home to a clean garage will make you feel accomplished and less focused on the many things that need to be done in your home.

Need even another reason to get the garage organized? Having a proper organization system in the garage will help to promote organization throughout the rest of your home. Having a spot to hang up wet coats and place sports equipment will decrease the risk of these items being strewn around your home.

Utilizing ceiling and wall space: Now that you’re feeling motivated, time to organize! If you’re lacking for floor space, start organizing from the top down. Overhead storage is a great place to store less frequently used items. This is especially easy if you have high ceilings in the garage. Make sure that you get a professional to help you with the installation of overhead storage, to ensure that it is secure and will not fall down.

Take full advantage of wall space by using wall mounting shelving and hook systems. I especially like hook systems because they allow multiple items to be stacked on one hook. Added plus: they allow for easy access of items. There’s no way you can go wrong.

Organizing with plastic bins: A great way to group like items is by using totes. Totes help keep your items in a dust free environment. They work well with cabinets and overhead storage, if you are looking for a complete solution for your garage.

Clear totes allow you to see the contents easily. However, be cautious not to stick all your items in totes. Doing so will make accessing items more time consuming and promote messy and unorganized behavior.

Organize your garage today and see the difference in how you feel!
